A splash of colour before September winds its way down…]
Its now busybusybusy. We’re working with Shinpei, a local Mie-ken artist on a live action-painting performance. We’re taking this show to Europe. Yes, a tour, dates not set yet. My job is creating a musical atmosphere while he paints his Very Faerie Fairies. At the same time Yuko draws the audience further into Shinpei’s world by interpreting through dance…and jokes. Action painting is a kind of cliche…but he has this whole world he draws up in front of your eyes, improvised in the same way me and Yuko create our shows. Its scarey starting with a blank canvas of wood/space/silence but a drip of colour at a time, a sprig of a jingle jangle here and a swish of movement and…if the fairies are with us, the audience has gone on a little journey. The best part about working with Shinpei is….normally after a performance all you’re left with are memories. But now there’s a memento. Its interesting seeing how many were touched by Shinpei’s work that they bought his paintings on the spot. Its gotten to the point that he’s created some “goods” based on characters because people want a memento of this experience. And also…the stories of his characters are really funny.
